FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will my fish survive the winter in my pond?

Yes! as long as your pond is more than 2 feet deep and winterized. To winterize your pond, you can do one of 3 things:

  1. You can add a deicer (heater that turns on and off to prevent freezing)
  2. You can add an aerator which creates air bubbles to keep the water from freezing over in that area while also oxygenating the water
  3. You can place a water pump 1-2 feet deep with the outlet pointed towards the surface to agitate the water in that area to prevent it from freezing over.

We recommend using two of these techniques in case one fails. Alternatively, you can keep your pond running through the winter months which will prevent freezing as well.

When do I stop feeding my fish for the winter and start feeding again in the spring?

Feed your fish only when the water temp is above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the best way to remove string algae from my pond?

Algae needs two things to grow, light and nutrients. One way to prevent algae is by adding floating plants as they block sunlight and compete for the nutrients. Another effective method is an Aquascape Iongen which releases copper into the waterThe algae mistakes it for a food source and the algae is killed off as it consumes it. Barley Straw is another method widely used as when barley starts to rot it creates Humic Acid that is toxic to algae but harmless to fish and plants.

Why should I have my pond cleaned out?

Doing a cleanout each spring gets rid of any sludge and organic waste that have accumulated making it easier to maintain. A proper cleanout includes adding a starter bacteria after the pond is re-filled.

How can I find the leak in my pond?

Start by turning off the waterfall (if you have one). Make sure you have aeration in the pond when doing this. If the water level does not drop when it is off, you know the leak is in the waterfall. If it continues to leak, let it drain until it stops so you can see the level where the leak may be. If it is just slightly lower than the edge, you could have a low edge. If it is a significant drop you may have a hole in the liner.
